11月18日，亚特兰大中国研究中心（China Research Center）中国研究演讲系列2020年秋季演讲请前美国国务院负责亚太事务的代理助理国务卿董云裳（Susan Thornton）做主旨演讲。她演讲的题目是“美中关系去向何方”（Where to From Here in US-China Relations?）。董云裳演讲之后将和中国研究中心的创始人Penny Prime就中美关系的方方面面展开对谈。演讲的主持人是中美印象的主编刘亚伟。

【演讲内容简介】
48 years after President Nixon’s trip to China and 42 years after President Carter and Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping made the decision to establish diplomatic relations, the bilateral relationship between the U.S. and China has hit the rock bottom. The growing hostility between two first and second largest economies in the world is threatening to derail the global pursuit for peace and security. Will there be a reset of the relationship in 2021? Can a new paradigm of managing the bilateral relationship be found? What should Washington do and what could Beijing do to stabilize the relationship and find ways to compete to make each nation great and cooperate to respond to global challenges?

SUSAN A. THORNTON is a Senior Fellow and Research Scholar at the Yale University Law School Paul Tsai China Center, Director of the Forum on Asia-Pacific Security at the National Committee on American Foreign Policy, and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Brookings Institution. Until July 2018, Thornton was Acting Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State and led East Asia policy making amid crises with North Korea, escalating trade tensions with China, and a fast-changing international environment. In previous State Department roles, she worked on U.S. policy toward China, Korea and the former Soviet Union and served in leadership positions at U.S. embassies in Central Asia, Russia, the Caucasus and China.

Dr. PENNY PRIME is the Founding Director of the China Research Center and Managing Editor of China Currents. She was clinical professor at the Institute of International Business, J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University from 2012 to 2020; professor at Mercer University, 2006 to 2012, earning tenure; and professor at Kennesaw State University, 1991 to 2006, earning tenure. Between 1987 and 2009, she co-developed and led eight eleven-week, student-focused seminars with Carleton College to Asia and China. She has also taught at Emory University and Duke Kunshan University as a visiting professor.
